Chapter 10

By the time their statements were done, Paul and Wes had tea set up for them on the dining room table.

“Thanks.” Suzie picked up the tea but didn’t drink it. “Mary, let me see those pictures you took again.”

“Sure.” Mary handed over her phone, and gazed at her for a long moment. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, I just think we need to take another look.” Suzie scrolled through the pictures, then shook her head. “All these prove is that Ava was interested in Jeremy. Right? If she had killed him, why didn’t she leave right after the murder? She seemed just as surprised as we were that Rich was actually Jeremy.”

“True. But she could have been pretending.” Mary took a sip of her tea as she sat down at the table. “And maybe she thought sticking around would throw any suspicion off her.”

“Maybe.” Suzie sat down as well. “But why all the research, all the effort, just to kill him? We still don’t even know why Jeremy was in Lara’s house to begin with.”

“You’re right.” Paul cleared his throat. “Knowing why he was here, exactly why, would make a big difference.”

“We think that he was on the hunt for some money he likely hid before he went to prison.” Mary sat back in her chair. “But Lara had moved to an entirely new house, how could he possibly have expected to find it in her house?”

“Unless.” Wes tapped his knuckles against the table. “Unless, Lara knew about the money. What if she took it? Maybe he told her where he hid it.”

“She said he wanted nothing to do with her.” Suzie shook her head. “He just used her, he didn’t love her at all.”

“She said.” Wes met her eyes. “But how can we know that’s true? She said she and her husband were planning to retire here. I’m sure that all that extra money could help lead to an easier life and cushion their retirement.”

“Wes, you’re right.” Mary set her cup down and stared into his eyes. “She might have been scamming us this whole time.”

“But there’s no way that Lara could have killed Jeremy.” Suzie sighed. “She’s tiny. Whoever killed Jeremy had to be strong enough to pin him down. She couldn’t possibly have done that.”

“You’re right.” Paul nodded as he looked over at her. “It had to be someone strong and fast.”

“Someone young?” Suzie stood up from her chair and walked over to the glass doors that led out onto the porch. “I think it was one of the boys. Or both.” She stared out through the window.

“What makes you think that?” Mary sipped her tea as she stepped up beside her.

“Because they’re young and very protective.” Suzie frowned, her lips hovered over her cup, but she didn’t take a sip.

“I agree, I can’t see Lara doing it.” Mary shrugged and swirled her tea in her cup. “But there is also the piano tuner, not to mention the current husband.”

“Both appear to be respectable.” Suzie raised an eyebrow.
