Chapter 10
By the time their statements were done, Paul and Wes had tea set up for them on the dining room table.
âThanks.â Suzie picked up the tea but didnât drink it. âMary, let me see those pictures you took again.â
âSure.â Mary handed over her phone, and gazed at her for a long moment. âAre you okay?â
âYes, I just think we need to take another look.â Suzie scrolled through the pictures, then shook her head. âAll these prove is that Ava was interested in Jeremy. Right? If she had killed him, why didnât she leave right after the murder? She seemed just as surprised as we were that Rich was actually Jeremy.â
âTrue. But she could have been pretending.â Mary took a sip of her tea as she sat down at the table. âAnd maybe she thought sticking around would throw any suspicion off her.â
âMaybe.â Suzie sat down as well. âBut why all the research, all the effort, just to kill him? We still donât even know why Jeremy was in Laraâs house to begin with.â
âYouâre right.â Paul cleared his throat. âKnowing why he was here, exactly why, would make a big difference.â
âWe think that he was on the hunt for some money he likely hid before he went to prison.â Mary sat back in her chair. âBut Lara had moved to an entirely new house, how could he possibly have expected to find it in her house?â
âUnless.â Wes tapped his knuckles against the table. âUnless, Lara knew about the money. What if she took it? Maybe he told her where he hid it.â
âShe said he wanted nothing to do with her.â Suzie shook her head. âHe just used her, he didnât love her at all.â
âShe said.â Wes met her eyes. âBut how can we know thatâs true? She said she and her husband were planning to retire here. Iâm sure that all that extra money could help lead to an easier life and cushion their retirement.â
âWes, youâre right.â Mary set her cup down and stared into his eyes. âShe might have been scamming us this whole time.â
âBut thereâs no way that Lara could have killed Jeremy.â Suzie sighed. âSheâs tiny. Whoever killed Jeremy had to be strong enough to pin him down. She couldnât possibly have done that.â
âYouâre right.â Paul nodded as he looked over at her. âIt had to be someone strong and fast.â
âSomeone young?â Suzie stood up from her chair and walked over to the glass doors that led out onto the porch. âI think it was one of the boys. Or both.â She stared out through the window.
âWhat makes you think that?â Mary sipped her tea as she stepped up beside her.
âBecause theyâre young and very protective.â Suzie frowned, her lips hovered over her cup, but she didnât take a sip.
âI agree, I canât see Lara doing it.â Mary shrugged and swirled her tea in her cup. âBut there is also the piano tuner, not to mention the current husband.â
âBoth appear to be respectable.â Suzie raised an eyebrow.
